Several specific laws apply to our work:
Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act protects foreign states from being sued in U.S. courts. However, the Act provides exceptions to that immunity, including civil liability for acts of state-sponsored terrorism.
This legislation provides a vehicle to go after human rights abusers in other countries, and to bring them to justice in U.S. courts where they must answer for their actions. Non-citizens who were victims in other countries may bring their tormentors to justice in U.S. courts.
This legislation creates civil liability for any individual who subjects another to torture or an extrajudicial killing.
